Henry D Cozen Scholarship

The Henry D. Cozens Scholarship is in recognition of the contributions of the late Henry D. Cozens to the field of power engineering technology.  Particularly, his contribution to the National Association of Power Engineers and its predecessors.

In September of 1879, a number of engineers who worked in power plants, met in the engine room of the Providence, Rhode Island Court House, where Henry D. Cozens was Chief Engineer.  Under his guidance, they formally organized themselves into a group and called it, The Engineers Association.

Thus it remained for three years when, on October 25, 1882, the original organization was incorporated as the National Association of Stationary Engineers (N.A.S.E.), with Mr. Cozens as its first National President.  N.A.S.E. continued and prospered until 1928, when the corporate name was changed to the National Association of Power Engineers (N.A.P.E.).

The Henry D. Cozens Scholarship has been amended since its conception.  Originally offered only to sons of members, the scholarship is now available to sons and daughters of members.  In 1975, the program was further amended as follows:

Members of the Association in good standing are also eligible for the scholarship

Students in any year of study at an accredited college, university, or technical college are eligible for the scholarship.

Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 per academic year for one year.

A winning applicant wishing to apply for additional scholarship money must submit an application each year.

The student must be enrolled full-time at their school.

Payment will be by check, written to the member.
Only the winner will be notified o the result of the award.

Deadline for filing applications with N.A.P.E. is May 31st of each year.

Felix W. Start Memorial Award

The Felix W. Start Memorial Award was first presented at the 83rd Annual Nationaål Association of Power Engineers Convention. New York Chapter 11 was the first recipient.
The Award is given to the Chapter or Association, under the umbrella of the National Association of Power Engineers, judged to have made the greatest contribution to licensing during each year. It is named for Felix W. Start, former National License Law Chairman, for his work in behalf of licensing. He was a Past President of Worcester, MA Chapter 32 and active at all levels of this Association.

The following criteria must be met to be eligible for this award:

To participate, a Chapter shall present to the Committee documents, programs, flyers, laws, proposed laws, or any factual proof of that Chapter’s activities. It shall not matter whether said proof involves city, county, state or federal laws, or whether said proof involves passage or promotion of a law. Judgement will be based on the amount of time devoted by a Chapter, results, scope and effects of said law or the promotion of a law. 

Chapter presentations should be made to the Felix W. Start Award Committee Chairperson not later than the close of business at the AM session of the second day of the National Convention. Presentations may be mailed prior to the Convention to “The Felix W. Start Award Committee”, c/o NAPE National Office.
Chapters may send one (no more than two) member representatives for an interview by the Award Committee as outlined in 1 above. Said representatives shall present themselves as the Award Committee Chairperson within the time limits stated in 2 above. 

Participation time shall begin with the close of the Annual Convention and end three weeks prior to the following Annual Convention.

Charlie Weiss Award

The Charlie Weiss Award, named after Virginia Chapter #1 Past President Weiss, is awarded to the Chapter that brings in the most new members through their efforts of presenting a new educational class or seminar.  This award was presented for the first time at the National Convention in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1989. The Weiss Award is a beautiful plaque with the winning Chapter’s name and the date awarded engraved on it.  The winning chapter is the holder of this award for one year and is presented to the next winner at the following convention. A new educational class or seminar is one that has not been offered within the last three years and qualifying students must become members of NAPE during or after attending the new educational class or seminar. Chapters having the most qualifying new members will win the award.  All entries must be received before or no later than the first day of the National Convention.  The winner will be announced at the Convention in June.
